All about Luz
The beautiful beaches boast miles of white sand
and crystal blue waters, and there is a wide range of beach bars and restaurants
to choose from for that perfect lazy lunch or evening meal and relaxed drink
whilst looking out across the Ocean and sands. At night time Luz is very
family-friendly with many excellent restaurants happy to welcome younger
children, and catering for all tastes and budgets. For the more energetic there
is of course golf, watersports, sailing and windsurfing - combine this with
street entertainment, a packed calendar of festivals, markets and fairs
throughout the year - this is a location you simply cannot fail to enjoy!
Many of our villas in Luz,
(on the western side of the Algarve, and approximately 6km from
Lagos) are beautifully located
right in
the charming fishing
village itself. Choose a villa here if you are looking for a resort which seamlessly
blends the character and history of the past with the demands of a modern holiday
destination. Luz has something for everyone - starting with it's safe, sandy
beaches which are often the centre attraction for many visitors.
For the more adventurous, water-sports are available including windsurfing and
boating. Tuition is available for water skiing and diving if you fancy learning
something new. The area is also good for surfing. The Luz Ocean Club offers
tennis courts, a fitness gym and swimming pools, and the sports centre in Burgau
offers squash, tennis, aerobics and other facilities as well as evening barbecues
and live music.
The nearby riding centre in Bensafrim offers rides, instruction
and day-long picnic rides. Bird watching can be arranged at various protected
reserves in the area guided by experienced ornithologists. The Luz Water Sports
Centre offers scuba-diving, windsurfing, fishing, sailing and snorkelling. There are also 3 excellent
golf courses nearby at Parque de Floresta, Bela Vista & Palmares.
In
the way of eating and entertainment, there are a number of good restaurants
in the village serving a variety of local and International dishes and two good
beach bars. There are also some lively bars in the commercial centre and along
the road edging to the beach. For an extended selection of bars and discos,
Lagos is nearby.
The development of Praia da Luz, around the
central beach, has been almost exclusively 'low rise'. The town consists of
apartments and villas of all sizes, and the facilities are principally aimed at
family holidays. There is a great variety of family friendly restaurants
and bars, good supermarkets and all the amenities for a complete family holiday. Luz has a
rich history which has been dominated by occupation - firstly by the Carthaginians and then by the Romans and there are the remains of fish salting vats and a roman villa to visit
close to the village centre itself. To the east of town you find some spectacular cliffs and among them the prominent black rock
known as the 'Luz Rock', or 'Rocha Negra'. This is an intrusion of lava produced from the
now extinct volcanoes of Monchique some 190 million to 135 million years ago.
Luz also boasts a church which is medieval in
origin. Its main chapel has a gothic triumphal arch and vaults, and the retable
of the main altar is decorated with gilded carving of a baroque style (mid to
late 18th century in style). There is a small aqueduct to channel water from
Quinta da Luz, and next to the beach are tanks for salting fish (see above)
which were almost certainly built by the Carthaginians and then used by the
Romans. Rising above the beach is the 17th century fort of Nossa Senhora da Luz
(Our Lady of Light) which has now been turned into a restaurant. Luz is just 8 minutes west of the larger
Marina town of Lagos which provides excellent sightseeing opportunities, along
with lots of shopping, good night life, and of course the large established marina.
Clients staying at our properties are
encouraged to visit the golf course at Palmares, which is a showpiece for the
imagination of Frank Pennink, one of the most prolific golf course designers in
Portugal. At Palmares, Pennink has created a course of undeniable beauty and
quality. The reputation of the course - a Par 71 - derives from its skilful use
of two different kinds of landscape, as well as its excellent level of
maintenance. After starting out on a difficult dogleg Par 4 from a high tee, the
golfer soon gets into the links which run behind the beach of Meia Praia, a
great expanse of white sand and high dunes. At hole number six the course turns
back inland in the direction of the clubhouse. From here on, the player faces
just the opposite challenge, with holes designed along curvy valleys bordered by
pine trees, and affording beautiful views over Lagos Bay and the Monchique
mountains. It is a perfect mixture of links and inland golf. From the veranda of
the clubhouse, set between holes 9 and 10, the view covers 25 km of Atlantic
ocean coast.
