Celebrating the sea.... On November 29th at around 10h00, those who are interested in maritime artefacts and naval history should make their way to Portimão to watch German school-ship the ‘Gorch Fock' docking in the city's port.

It will remain in Portimão until December 3rd, before returning to its native port in Kiel, where it should arrive on December 21st. On November 30th, and December 1st and 2nd, between 14h00 and 17h00, the ship will lower its plank to welcome onboard anyone who would like to have a look inside, free of charge.

A special bond is shared between the Gorch Fock and Portugal's naval history, as the stunning vessel is an exact replica of ‘Sagres' tall ship, a Portuguese school-ship at the service of the National Navy.

The Algarve is the German vessel's last destination on what is its 147 th journey across the seas.

Its arrival in the Algarve is part of a month's initiatives to celebrate National Sea Day, the official day being on November 16 th.

Other initiatives comprising the month's sea-inspired activities include lectures on a number of maritime matters in Olhão, Faro, Portimão and Sagres, sea ‘baptisms' for students and the general public, on November 16th a exhibition named ‘Service to Combat pollution' will be unveiled in the ‘Jardim do Pescador Olhanense', Olhão.

On November 17th and 18th a number of Portuguese navy vessels will also be open to the public in Olhão's Doca Pesca docks.
