Tribute to Jim Player - 1936-2008.... Jim Player, one of Algarve's longest standing residents, died in the Santa Maria Hospital, in Faro, on Sun 18th Nov 2008, following six months hospitalisation due to an assault that took place on Mon 7th May.

Jim put up a fantastic fight in his battle to recover from the head injuries he received, but eventually succumbed to pneumonia and neurological complications. He sustained the injuries in May this year following a dispute over parking which left him in an coma for the first two and half weeks in intensive care in Lisbon.

Jim Player was the original founder of The Algarve News, in June 1977, the region's first English language publication and which was later to become The Portugal News.

Aided by his then ‘Junior Partner' Fred Phillips, who went on to establish the highly successful Atelier do Sul Design Consultancy Company, Jim and Fred planted the seeds of what was to become Portugal's most prominent English-language newspaper.

Jim was known and loved by many long-term ex-pats, as well as the local community, and will be greatly missed.

A "Send-Off" party is being organised for Sat 8th Dec, so family and friends can gather to share all their funny stories about Jim. The venue is yet to be confirmed. For more info, send an e-mail to:
