Ryanair closes Faro - Madrid route.... This week the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA), the Portuguese Institute for Tourism (TP) and ANA –Airports of Portugal – jointly announced the end of Ryanair's Faro – Madrid route, which was launched late last year at a promotional fare of just €10 return, plus taxes.

On Saturday, November 10th, more than one thousand firemen across the country were fighting to put out 400 fires that incredibly broke out on the same day in less than 24 hours. These figures have set a new record for the number of fires registered on one single day, the previous maximum being 332 fires, registered on Tuesday, November 6th, just the week before.

Pilots call off strike.... Industrial action called by pilots employed by national flag carrier TAP Air Portugal wreaked havoc at the nation's airports as a number of flights were cancelled. The action staged on Tuesday was to have continued on Thursday and Saturday and through into November, but further strikes were called off after a deal was brokered late Wednesday evening by the airline and union representatives.

Algarve Archaeological Association November meeting.... The next meetings of the Algarve Archaeological Association will be on Tuesday, 6th November. The first of the two meetings will be at the Junta da Freguesia de São Sebastião, Loulé at 2.30pm and the second will be at the Convento São José in Lagoa at 6.30pm. Life Expectancy up whilst divorce rates surge.... Figures released by the European Commission show that life expectancy is on the increase in Portugal together with a surge in divorce rates. The Commission’s official statistics agency Eurostat, in its review of demographic trends in the 25-member state European Union, revealed that the EU’s population increased by 2.3 million or 0.5 per cent in 2005 compared to a 2.1 million rise.
