There are many wonderful beaches in and around Carvoeiro. It has to be said that if you are planning to stay for just a week, or even a fortnight, most clients are unlikely to find many of these as they are often accessible via small roads which look to be little more than donkey tracks. But if you persist, and explore, then you are likely to discover some of the most beautiful expanses of sand and surf that you will ever experience.
A word on pronunciation – the Portuguese for beach is ‘praia’, which is not to be confused with the Spanish ‘playa’. The beaches which are closest to our holiday rental properties are ‘Centianes’, ‘Marinha’, ‘Covo’, and of course the central beach of Carvoeiro itself. One, or all, of these beaches will be within easy reach of your holiday accommodation when staying with us in the Carvoeiro area.
The town beach, Praia do Carvoeiro is a beautifully sheltered sandy bay and spreads out just in front of the square with cliffs protecting it on either side. There are bars and cafés ideally placed around the square so that you can enjoy the view even when you have left the sand behind. Watersports like jetskis and pedaloes are available at the beach for those who like messing about on the water and there are a couple of diving schools based in Carvoeiro if you prefer to be under the water.
The local fishermen also make use of their boats during the day to offer visitors the chance to take boat trips around the coastline and to see the caves.

Centianes beach is lovely, with plenty of space at low tide. It has been recently extended and some of the older cliff-face has been removed to make it safer. There is a good fish restaurant (‘O Stop’), overlooking the beach which is approached by a pathway from a small car park. There are a few steps leading down onto the beach but accessibility is good and there are always plenty of sunbeds and shades available for hire.
A little closer into Carvoeiro, and directly in front of the impressive ‘Almansor Hotel’ is Vale Covo beach. This is a pretty little cove which is reached by quite a few steps. The cliffs are lit up at night and give a romantic view from the Almonsor Hotel bar balcony.
Praia da Marinha is one of the best and most surprising beaches in the area. Hidden from sight until you walk along the cliff top path, the sandy beach then stretches away from the attractive honeycomb cliffs. At the western end an opening through the cliff reveals a secret cove which is only accessible at low tide. Relatively quiet because of the lack of surrounding development, the beach is a long walk down a lot of steps. It is, however, well provided for with lifeguards, car parking, a beach bar/restaurant, windsurfing hire and boat trips during peak season.Marinha beach is reached either by leaving the N125 at the International School east of Lagoa, or by travelling east past Benagil.
